Landscaping your garden can have a profound
influence upon both the appearance of your home and the way that
you use it. Of course a well kept, cleverly designed garden can
greatly beautify a house but you will also find that you and your
family not only enjoy the view but you will also end up spending
more time in your garden than previously. Key to a good garden
design is choosing the best and most beautiful plants, shrubs and
trees.
Choosing trees for your landscape garden is not a simple case of
browsing through nursery catalogs and picking out the best
looking. There are several important factors to consider and,
possibly, the most important is your location and the area's
climate. The choice of trees suitable for growing in a
Mediterranean will be vastly different to those suitable for
other areas of Europe such as the United Kingdom. Again, when we
look to North America different trees grow better in States than
others. Some trees prefer warmer or mild climates while others
prefer colder area with cold winters. Before you decide which
trees to use in your garden you will need to discover which are
considered suitable for your area.
Choosing Trees Suitable for Your Area
One of the easiest ways in which to find out which tree species
will grow well in your landscape garden is to pay a visit to one
or more local nurseries. Local nurseries and garden centers will,
mainly, stock flowers, plants, bushes and trees which are likely
to grow successfully in most garden within reasonable proximity.
Furthermore such places are often staffed by people who
understand local gardening and some nurseries employ specialist
experts to ensure that their stock remains in peak condition.
More often than not these folk are more than happy to spend time
with you sharing their knowledge and making suggestions based
upon their learning and experience. Such advice can help avoid
some serious disasters as even in relatively small areas some
things, such as the type of ground, can vary considerably.
Another method of choosing trees for your garden is unbelievably
simple, just take a drive around and make notes on which trees
are growing well and those which you most like. If a tree grows
well in a garden nearby it is extremely likely that it will do
equally as well in your own. If you are lucky enough to spot
somebody in their garden, which has a tree that you like,
don't be afraid to pull up and ask them a little about their
garden, who designed it, who maintains it and if there are any
things they think that you would benefit in knowing. If you are
polite and introduce yourself, complimenting them on their
wonderful garden, most folk will respond well. While driving
around also take a note of which trees seem to be failing, if the
same species appears to be failing in many gardens it would be
best to avoid that type altogether. If you see that a species of
tree which you would like to have in your garden but has failed
in one or two gardens but grows well in others you should assume
that there is something important that you should know about it
and further investigation would be required before making that
final decision.
Another source of information is the Internet. Gardening web
sites offer a wealth of advice, hints and tips and many of the
online shops include important information on their product
information pages. Browsing through such sites will equip you
with an enormous amount of knowledge, endless photographs of
trees and it will also help you to understand how much your are
likely to have to pay for your trees. While looking around
gardening sites keep an eye out for forums as these can prove to
be a real life saver. Gardening forums are often lively with a
vibrant mix of individuals interested in the subject with members
of all different levels of ability from the beginner to the
full-time professional contractors. Take time to look around the
forum and do not be afraid to jump in and make a few posts. Once
you feel comfortable you can start a new thread asking for help
and advice about choosing trees for your landscape design. You
will most likely get a number of replies and a general discussion
will begin related to your question.
Other Important Considerations
Besides location and climate there are also many more factors
that will need some consideration. Some things are often
overlooked, if you are likely to have children playing in your
garden it would be best to avoid trees which are poisonous, if
you will be having a pool, pond or other water feature you may
want to avoid planting deciduous trees too closely because when
they lose their leaves for the winter you will need to ensure
that they do not foul the water.
You will also need to consider the size of your garden. Some
trees grow faster than others, some grow much larger than others
and some trees have incredibly invasive roots. You will need to
find a tree of suitable size for your garden but some trees can
be easily pruned and kept to a set size. Maybe, if you wish to
learn more about trees, you should purchase a good book or rent
one from a local library.
